Opera Theatre Large Image

We have recently undertaken a comprehensive investigation of the Opera Theatre which is suffering from numerous practical and aesthetic issues. These issues include aging equipment and staging machinery, acoustics, sightlines and air conditioning problems, access issues for people with mobility problems, as well as a cramped and inadequate orchestra pit.

Technical studies showed there are numerous opportunities to improve the theatre that were not possible even 10 years ago.

All of this information was forwarded to Sydney Opera House's architect, Jørn Utzon to inform his new concept designs to remodel and significantly improve the theatre.

Utzon was working with his architect son, Jan, and Sydney-based architect Richard Johnson and international technical experts, looking at developing the theatre for modern day performance and technical requirements. An extensive program of consultations with the major companies about their needs for the theatre has been undertaken as part of this preliminary project.

Significantly improving the Opera Theatre and realising Utzon's ideas for the interiors of the building would be a wonderful opportunity. Sydney Opera House is focussed on exploring all possibilities to make this happen.
