"As for Jurowski, this was proof - hardly now required - of his infinitely detailed preparation, reflected in every nuance and layer of the score. Ebb and flow was securely judged with never a note out of place. From icy hush to thunderous tumult, the London Philharmonic played with exciting commitment."  THE OBSERVER

I am delighted to announce that Sydney Opera House will present the renowned London Philharmonic Orchestra in October with the Australian debut of Principal Conductor, Vladimir Jurowski.

For Sydney Opera House this represents a crucial investment in the creative and cultural offering of our region. Bringing international orchestras to perform in Sydney is no small feat, however we believe in doing so we fulfil our role to enrich the country’s cultural landscape. This endeavour is the latest offering in our successful World Orchestras program which commenced in 2006 with the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Valery Gergiev, followed by last year’s concerts with the Israel Philharmonic conducted by Zubin Mehta.

Maestro Jurowski is regarded as one of the world’s finest young conductors and his rise to the world stage has been nothing short of meteoric. He is Music Director of the prestigious Glyndebourne Festival and has conducted many of the world’s great orchestras and opera companies.

Established by Sir Thomas Beecham in 1932, the London Philharmonic Orchestra has been resident at Festival Hall since 1992 and has played annually at Glyndebourne Festival Opera since 1964. It is one of the most recorded orchestras in the world, and regularly records the scores to major Hollywood feature films, including the Academy Award-winning The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

With the invaluable support of our Presenting Partner NAB, our World Orchestras program continues to bring celebrated orchestras and conductors to our Concert Hall stage with programs that include some of the greatest symphonic works and most loved concertos of all time.

I am sure you will be inspired by these dazzling concerts and look forward to seeing you there.

CONDUCTOR: VLADIMIR JUROWSKI

"A white hot excitement has gripped London's orchestral scene since Vladimir Jurowski, 36, became chief conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.”  EVENING STANDARD (UK)

Born in Moscow, Jurowski has enjoyed a spectacular rise since his highly successful debut conducting Rimsky-Korsakov’s May Night in 1995. In January 2001, this masterful conductor took up the position as Music Director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera, as well as making his debut as a Guest Conductor with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2003 he was named Principal Guest Conductor, and within just three years, London Philharmonic proudly announced him as their 11th Principal Conductor, following on from such esteemed conductors as Sir Thomas Beecham, Sir Adrian Boult, Bernard Haitink and Sir Georg Solti.

Jurowski has conducted many of the world’s greatest Orchestras in both Europe and the United States, including the Berlin Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw, Dresden Staatskapelle and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He makes his Australian debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert series that will have the most seasoned concertgoer sitting forward in their seat, enthralled.

Since becoming Principal Conductor, Vladimir Jurowski has had critics raving and audiences transfixed. The Independent (UK) claimed Jurowski has a way of injecting new life into pieces that have been heard thousands of time before, “and had us (yes, even jaded music critics) leaving the hall feeling like we’d never heard a note of this music before”.

PIANO SOLOIST: JEAN-YVES THIBAUDET

Masterly, brilliant, poetic, miraculous, breathtaking, virtuosic: these are only a handful of the many accolades the press has used to describe pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.

A charismatic and versatile musician acclaimed for his sensitivity and ranges of colour and texture, he is sought after by today’s foremost orchestras, festivals, conductors and collaborative musicians. In both live performance and recordings, he continues to uphold his reputation as one of the world’s finest pianists.

His ongoing relationships with world-renowned orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra and San Francisco Symphony brings him to such destinations as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Concertgebouw on a regular basis.

VIOLIN SOLOIST: VADIM REPIM

Music is Russian violinist Vadim Repin’s mother tongue. His astonishing ability to draw a rich palette of sound from his instrument, together with his dazzling technique, has enthralled audiences around the globe.

At five he started to play the violin. At eleven he won the Wieniawski Competition gold medal in all age categories and gave recital débuts in Moscow and St Petersburg. At fourteen there were débuts in Tokyo, Munich, Berlin, and Helsinki; at fifteen in Carnegie Hall. At seventeen he was the youngest ever winner of the world’s most demanding violin competition, the Reine Elisabeth Concours.

Since then he has played with the world’s greatest orchestras, including the Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, The Cleveland Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw, San Francisco Symphony, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, La Scala and New York Philharmonic, under the world’s leading conductors.
